Louise Margaret, Duchess of Connaught and Strathearn, was a princess born in Prussia who became a prominent public figure in the United Kingdom and the British Empire when she married Prince Arthur, the seventh son of Queen Victoria. As a consort she accompanied her husband on military and representational duties across the empire, including extended stays in India where she supported women’s healthcare, and visits to Canada that culminated in her acting as vice‑consort while the duke served as Governor General (1911–1916). In Canada the duchess was noted for her advocacy of public health: she inspected hospitals, exposed poor sanitary conditions, and sponsored military and civilian institutions. During the First World War she created and chaired hospital funds that financed hospitals, ambulances and the “Canada Block” in British and French hospitals, in addition to supporting initiatives by women’s organizations. A patron of the arts and of women’s sport, she encouraged Canadian artists and established the Duchess of Connaught Gold Cup, the trophy for the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship. Marked by health problems throughout her life, she returned to Britain in 1916 and devoted herself to aid for prisoners of war until her death in 1917; she was the first member of the British royal family to be cremated.
