Duquesa de Massa Maria Beatrice d’Este

Photo: Reproduction

Maria Beatrice Ricarda d’Este was an Italian princess who became Sovereign Duchess of Massa and Carrara and a central figure in the dynastic transition of the Este states into the Habsburg sphere of influence. The only surviving legitimate daughter of Duke Ercole III and Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina, she inherited rights that—by a local exception—allowed female succession in Massa, although Salic law prevented her inheritance in Modena. She married Archduke Ferdinand Karl, founding the new House of Austria-Este; the union resulted from lengthy diplomatic negotiations between Modena and the Viennese court aimed at preserving the autonomy of the Este domains. As the consort of the governor of Milan, she took part in the courtly milieu that accompanied architectural and cultural reforms promoted by the family. Sovereign of Massa in two periods (1790–1796 and again from 1815 until her death), her life reflected the tensions of the Napoleonic era and the territorial reconfigurations of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The last direct descendant of the old House d’Este, she left a dynastic and political legacy tied to the survival and reorganization of the Italian states under Austrian influence.
