Françoise Madeleine d’Orléans was a French princess by birth and, through marriage, duchess consort of Savoy. The daughter of Gaston of France, Duke of Orléans, and Marie of Lorraine, she belonged to the Bourbon court and was a first cousin of King Louis XIV. She held the courtesy title Mademoiselle de Valois and was raised in the Château de Blois, where she grew up among notable court figures such as Louise de La Vallière. In 1663 she married Charles Emmanuel II of Savoy; the match formed part of the dynastic alliances common among closely related branches of European nobility at the time. The princess accompanied her husband to Turin, where she sought to adapt to the new court and the duties of a duchess consort. Shortly after her arrival she fell ill and died at the Royal Palace of Turin in January 1664 at the age of fifteen, leaving no issue. Her burial in Turin Cathedral was accompanied by intense expressions of grief from the duke, who arranged elaborate funeral rites. Françoise Madeleine’s brief life illustrates the precariousness and vulnerabilities faced by princesses within the political and dynastic context of the seventeenth century.
