Charlotte Louise Juliette Grimaldi, known as the Duchess of Valentinois, was a central figure in the House of Grimaldi in the 20th century. Born out of wedlock, she was recognized and adopted by Louis II to preserve the Monegasque succession, becoming heir apparent between 1922 and 1944. The legal controversy over the validity of that adoption shaped her status and the principality's dynastic fate. She was married by arrangement to Pierre, Duke of Valentinois, with whom she had two children, including Rainier III, the future Prince of Monaco. The marriage was unhappy and ended in separation and divorce, but it ensured the continuity of the Grimaldi line through her son. In 1944 she formally renounced her succession rights in favor of Rainier while retaining her titles. Later she graduated in social work and devoted herself to rehabilitation initiatives at Le Marchais, where she spent her final years. Her public and private life—marked by dynastic decisions, scandals, and social work—left an ambiguous legacy in Monegasque history.
