Edith Stein (1891–1942) was a German philosopher and theologian of Jewish origin who converted to Catholicism and became a Discalced Carmelite, venerated as Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. She earned a doctorate in philosophy with the dissertation On the Problem of Empathy, became an assistant to Edmund Husserl, and was one of the first women to gain academic prominence within the phenomenological tradition, advocating for professional recognition of women. Throughout the 1920s Stein combined teaching, translation work, and comparative studies of Thomas Aquinas and Husserl, and translated important Catholic works. Her intellectual work covered issues of empathy, education, and the relationship between faith and reason, arguing that faith could be closer to divine wisdom than philosophy’s purely investigative approach. With the rise of Nazism, her status as a Jewish convert subjected her to persecution: she entered the Carmel in 1933 and, as repression escalated, moved to a convent in the Netherlands. In 1942 she was deported and killed at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Canonized in 1998, she is remembered as a martyr and as a figure who combined philosophical thought, religious commitment, and witness in the face of twentieth-century violence.
