Edmond de Goncourt was a French writer, art critic and literary historian, noted for his collaboration with his brother Jules on diaries, studies of the eighteenth century and works of art criticism. The pair became known for portraying figures and customs of the Ancien Régime and for detailed studies of painting and artists, contributing to nineteenth‑century cultural historiography. After Jules’s death, Edmond continued his literary career under his own name, publishing novels, plays and monographic studies of artists such as Watteau and Prud’hon. He remains notable for the editorial project and documentary research that brought together correspondence, memoirs and accounts of theatrical and artistic life. In his will he established the Académie Goncourt, the body that went on to award the Prix Goncourt, becoming a central institution in the Francophone literary scene by annually honoring outstanding novels. His legacy combines critical research on art and customs with a lasting influence on the institutional recognition of French literature.
