Edmond Jules René Jouhaud was a senior officer of the French Air Force whose military career spanned from the 1920s to the events that marked the end of colonial rule in Algeria. A graduate of Saint‑Cyr with extensive experience in missions in French West Africa, Indochina and in air administration, he rose to the highest ranks of the Air Army and became Chief of Staff in 1955. During the Algerian War he served as a commander in the North African theatre and became the joint deputy to General Salan. A supporter of keeping Algeria under French sovereignty, Jouhaud took part in the Algiers putsch of April 1961 and joined the Organisation armée secrète (OAS), at one point commanding the Oran zone. After the coup failed he lived clandestinely, was condemned to death by a military court in 1962 and subsequently spared by a presidential pardon; his sentence was commuted and he was ultimately amnestied in 1968. In the post‑conflict period, Jouhaud took on a public role in veterans’ and repatriates’ organizations and published memoirs defending his political stance. Reinstated to his ranks in 1982, he remains a controversial figure in twentieth‑century French history, a symbol of the tensions between the armed forces and civilian authority during decolonization.
