Edmond Locard was a forensic physician and a pioneer of criminalistics in France, active chiefly in Lyon during the early decades of the twentieth century. In 1910 he founded what is regarded as the world’s first police science laboratory, where he introduced and developed techniques such as fingerprinting alongside the period’s anthropometric practices. His institutional and scientific work helped professionalize criminal investigation and promote international cooperation among police forces. Locard is best remembered for the so-called exchange principle — the idea that every contact leaves traces — a formulation that remains a theoretical foundation in forensic laboratories. Author of an extensive multi-volume Traité de criminalistique, he systematized methods in ballistics, toxicology, identification by impressions, and document examination; these works influenced generations of experts. His career included controversial moments: he applied innovative techniques in high-profile cases but also made interpretive errors, including a later conviction acknowledged as mistaken. Beyond his role as an expert, he collaborated as a music critic and author, maintaining a diverse written output that reinforced his public role in Lyon’s scientific and cultural life.
