Edna Ferber was a prominent American writer in the early decades of the twentieth century, working as a novelist, short-story writer and playwright. She became known for depicting strong female characters and for addressing ethnic and social discrimination in her plots, while consistently emphasizing the moral integrity of her central figures. Her work achieved wide popular success and frequent adaptation for stage and screen: among her best-known works are So Big (Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, 1925), Show Boat (which inspired the Kern and Hammerstein musical) and Giant (adapted as the film Giant, 1956). Several plays and novels were turned into award-winning films and musicals, including Cimarron, Saratoga Trunk and Dinner at Eight. In addition to her literary output, Ferber took an active part in New York’s cultural scene, was a member of the Algonquin Round Table, and exerted lasting influence on the representation of women in American popular fiction. Her work continues to be studied for combining commercial appeal with social concern and for spawning reinterpretations for theatre, film and music throughout the twentieth century.
