Edna St. Vincent Millay was an American lyrical poet and playwright whose work and persona challenged the cultural conventions of the early twentieth century. She became known at a young age for the poem “Renascence” and achieved institutional recognition when she won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1923, the first time the award honored a woman in that category. Her output includes volumes of verse, sonnets addressed to lovers, and translations, as well as verse plays and a one-act play considered representative of her dramatic voice. A proponent of female independence in her personal life, Millay lived a bohemian lifestyle that contrasted with the social expectations of her era; she had romantic relationships with both women and men, and her marriage to Eugen Jan Boissevain functioned as a partnership that allowed her to devote herself to writing. Her poem “First Fig” is among her most cited and encapsulates the ardent, brief tone that characterizes much of her poetry. Millay’s critical reputation was also cemented by later honors, such as the Frost Medal in 1943, and by the preservation of her Steepletop property, now a literary memorial. The strength of her lyrical voice and her example of personal autonomy have kept her influential in twentieth‑century American poetry.
