Edoardo Mangiarotti was one of the greatest fencers in history, with an international career spanning 25 years and an unrivaled tally of 39 medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships. A specialist in épée who also competed successfully in foil, he won five Olympic golds — individual and team — along with multiple silver and bronze medals between 1936 and 1960, becoming one of Italy’s most decorated athletes. Born into a family of fencing masters, he received rigorous training from childhood; his father retrained him to be left‑handed for a competitive edge, and his brothers were also prominent athletes. Mangiarotti was noted both for his consistency in competition and his technical adaptability, maintaining sustained dominance in épée while ranking as a top rival in foil. His historic achievements include the individual épée gold in Helsinki in 1952 and leadership of several victorious team campaigns. He set records for longevity and performance until his retirement in 1961 and later received honors from the International Olympic Committee, which celebrated him as a leading figure in the sport. Mangiarotti’s legacy endures within Italy’s fencing tradition: an exemplar of technique, discipline, and competitive longevity with a lasting impact on fencers and coaches.
