Édouard Herriot was a central figure in French politics during the Third Republic, a prominent member of the Radical Party and three times head of government (1924, 1926 and 1932). Trained in letters and connected to academia—he was elected to the Académie française in 1946 and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow—he combined a parliamentary career with municipal leadership, exerting long influence in Lyon, where he served as mayor and began his local political career.
At the national level he served as deputy, senator and minister, and presided over the National Assembly in 1947. A well-known defender of laïcité, he sought to strengthen the separation of Church and State, at times severing diplomatic relations with the Vatican in actions related to religious policy, especially in sensitive areas such as Alsace-Lorraine.
His public activity also included engagement in civil causes: he sided with intellectuals such as Émile Zola in the Dreyfus affair and took part in the founding of the League of Human Rights in Lyon. Honoured with the Legion of Honour, he left a legacy as a pragmatic Radical leader who promoted republican reforms and maintained a lasting presence in French political and cultural life.
