Eileen Myles is an American poet and writer with a prolific output that includes more than twenty volumes of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, libretti, plays, and performances. They became a central figure in New York’s literary scene through participation in and later leadership of the St. Mark’s Poetry Project, where they collaborated with avant‑garde figures and helped broaden the institution’s aesthetic and cultural reach during the 1980s. Known for a restless, performative voice, Myles received critical attention — at times described as the “rock star” of contemporary poetry — and has won awards such as the Lambda Literary Award (Fiction) and a Guggenheim Fellowship, the latter supporting the completion of Afterglow, a memoir that mixes factual account and fantasy. Their works Inferno (a poet’s novel) and the poem/play “An American Poem” are landmarks in their production and have circulated internationally. Beyond writing, Myles has taught at several universities and developed politically charged performance projects, including a symbolic presidential campaign that resonated in activist art of the 1990s. They use the pronouns they/them and are considered an influence on generations of post‑punk writers and artists.
