Wilhelm I of Hesse (1743–1821) was the Elector of Hesse-Cassel, ruling from 1785 until his death. He inherited one of the largest fortunes in Europe—largely built on leasing troops to Great Britain during the American War of Independence—and became known as an influential patron and investor, among the earliest backers of Mayer Amschel Rothschild. A financial alliance with the Rothschilds allowed him to transfer and safeguard his wealth during the Napoleonic wars, indirectly supporting British operations on the Iberian Peninsula and helping the rise of the Rothschild banking dynasty.
In 1803 he obtained the title of Elector, but was deposed in 1806 when the electorate was annexed by the Kingdom of Westphalia; he went into exile in Denmark and returned in 1813 after Napoleon’s defeat. At the Congress of Vienna he sought recognition as king, a request that was not granted. His long administration helped reestablish local authority in the post‑Napoleonic period.
Beyond his legitimate children, Wilhelm left a large number of acknowledged descendants born out of wedlock, which influenced the region’s dynastic and social networks. His legacy combines territorial wealth, political intervention in European wars, and a role as a financial patron during the transition to the modern international banking system.
