Elector of Saxony from 1611 to 1656, Johann Georg I (Jean-Georges I) was a prince of the House of Wettin whose long rule was shaped by the consequences of the Thirty Years’ War. The heir of the Albertine line, he succeeded his brother Christian II and upheld Saxony’s traditional policy of balance, seeking to preserve the religious status quo established by the Peace of Augsburg.
At the outset of the European conflict, Johann Georg alternated between neutrality and pragmatic alliances: he initially supported Emperor Ferdinand II against the King of Bohemia, but in 1631 allied with the Swedish forces under Gustavus Adolphus to confront the Catholic League. A series of military victories and defeats — including Breitenfeld, Nördlingen and the campaigns of Torstensson and Banér — led him to negotiate the Peace of Prague (1635) and later accept the terms of the Peace of Westphalia (1648), which confirmed some of his gains.
The Elector faced severe financial problems and territorial devastation resulting from the invasions, producing internal unrest and state indebtedness. He died in Dresden, leaving the electorate to his eldest son and, by testament, dividing parts of the territory among his other sons, creating cadet branches whose possessions were gradually reunified in the 18th century.
