Maria Antonia Walburga Sinforosa of Bavaria was Electress of Saxony, regent from 1763 to 1768, and a prominent cultural figure of the 18th century. Born at the Bavarian court, she received a refined artistic education and played an active role in the musical life of the Bavarian and Dresden courts, where she settled after marrying the heir to the Saxon electorate. As a composer, singer and harpsichordist, she published works under the pseudonym ETPA and is best known for the operas Il trionfo della fedeltà and Talestri, regina delle amazoni. She studied with masters such as Nicola Porpora and Johann Adolph Hasse, adopting influences from the opera seria style; she also wrote librettos and premiered roles in her own works. On the political and economic front, in addition to her regency she renounced succession rights to Poland in 1765 and promoted industrial initiatives in Dresden, founding a textile factory and a brewery. Her legacy combines governance, cultural patronage and musical production important to the 18th-century operatic scene.
