Elisabeth von Anhalt-Zerbst was a princess of Anhalt who, by marriage, became Electress of Brandenburg at the end of the 16th century. The daughter of Prince Joachim Ernest of Anhalt and Agnes of Barby-Mühlingen, she married in 1577 to John George of Brandenburg, then an elderly prince; the union strengthened dynastic alliances and included a considerable dowry and territorial arrangements, such as the town and palace of Crossen. Throughout her life she acted as a cultural patron, most notably as protector of the scholar Leonhard Thurneysser. She had numerous children, among whom Christian, Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, and Joachim Ernest, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, stand out; their lines and marriages helped weave alliances among the German noble houses. Widowed on her husband's death, she retired to Crossen Castle, where she lived in fragile health as a result of successive pregnancies. She was buried in the Hohenzollern crypt at Berlin Cathedral, and is chiefly remembered for her dynastic role and for her cultural patronage within the German courts.
