Emma Jung (born Emma Rauschenbach) was a Swiss therapist and author whose life and fortune played a central role in the establishment of analytical psychology. Married to Carl Gustav Jung, she supported the development of his ideas both financially and intellectually, serving as interlocutor, reviewer and, by some accounts, an “intellectual editor” for decades. A member of the family that owned IWC Schaffhausen, she became one of Switzerland’s wealthiest heirs, which provided economic stability for the family and for Jung’s intellectual work. By her own efforts, Emma also practiced analysis and pursued cultural research, showing particular interest in the legend of the Holy Grail and its psychological resonances. She kept in contact with figures of the first generation of psychoanalysis, including a brief correspondence with Sigmund Freud, and published work engaging central themes of analytical psychology, such as anima and animus. Emma’s personal life was marked by the complex dynamics of her marriage to Jung, including coexisting with other women who were significant in his life; nevertheless she retained substantial influence over his work and legacy. After her death from cancer in 1955, Jung spoke of her with great reverence, and her name remains linked both to the material support and the intellectual contribution to Jungian work.
