Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie was a French historian and author known for his research on Languedoc and peasant society under the Ancien Régime. A prominent member of the third generation of the Annales school, he developed social-history approaches that combined longue durée perspectives, quantitative evidence, and cultural awareness, becoming a touchstone for scholars of rural and medieval history. A graduate of the École Normale Supérieure and professor at the Collège de France from 1973 to 1999, Le Roy Ladurie produced influential works, among them his thesis published as a book, Les paysans de Languedoc, which introduced innovative methods of social and demographic analysis. His academic career also included appointments at universities and at the École Pratique des Hautes Études. Active in public debate, he contributed regularly to newspapers and to television, and his political positions evolved over his life — from membership in the Communist Party after the war to a later break in 1956. Recognized internationally, he was a member of scientific academies and left a durable mark on the renewal of French historiography concerning rural populations and social structures.
