Emmanuelle Charpentier is a French microbiologist and immunologist renowned for turning a bacterial defense mechanism, the CRISPR-Cas9 system, into a practical tool for genome editing. Her research showed that the nuclease Cas9, combined with synthetic guide RNAs, enables precise cuts in DNA sequences—a technique widely adopted to modify the genomes of plants, animals and cells in the laboratory.
Trained in biochemistry, microbiology and genetics, Charpentier earned a doctorate with work at the Institut Pasteur and gained experience at research centers in Europe and the United States, including Rockefeller University and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She returned to Europe to lead groups at institutions such as Umeå University and, later, the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin.
For the impact of her discovery she has received major international awards, including the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (shared with Jennifer Doudna), as well as honors such as the Breakthrough Prize and the Gruber Prize in Genetics. Her work transformed practices in molecular biology and opened new directions in biomedical research and biotechnology.
