Emmy Damerius-Koenen was a German communist politician whose career encompassed exile, postwar political reconstruction, and the organization of women in East Germany. A member of the Communist Party of Germany from the 1920s, she spent the Nazi period abroad—primarily in the Soviet Union, where she worked in Comintern bodies, and in various émigré centers such as Paris and London—returning to Germany in December 1945.
In the postwar years she became prominent as an organizer and leader of the women’s movement: she was among the founders of the Demokratischer Frauenbund Deutschlands (DFD), holding vice-presidential posts and, for a short time, the presidency of the organization. Her international experience helped the DFD integrate into antifascist and communist-oriented international women’s bodies.
Over the following decades she worked as an editor and journalist for publications in the Soviet zone and the GDR, producing articles and memoirs on the history of the communist movement and women’s organizations. Her legacy lies in the institutional building of women’s organizations in East Germany and in documenting the experiences of exile and communist activism.
