Ernst Thälmann was a leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and a central figure of the radical left during the Weimar Republic. As head of the KPD after the Spartacist uprising, he organized and mobilized working-class sectors and even stood as the communist candidate in presidential elections in the 1920s and early 1930s. Under his leadership the party moved closer to the positions and influence of the Soviet Union and adopted the thesis that identified social democracy as its principal adversary, a stance that deepened the fragmentation of the German left.
Thälmann also led paramilitary formations such as the Roter Frontkämpferbund and founded Antifaschistische Aktion in 1932, initiatives that reflected the political radicalization and growing polarization of the period. After the Nazi rise to power he was arrested in 1933 by the Gestapo and remained detained for years, held in isolation and subject to persecution. In August 1944 he was transferred to Buchenwald, where he was executed on the orders of the Nazi regime and his body cremated.
Thälmann’s life acquired strong symbolic weight: for the communist left he became a martyr of resistance to Nazism; for historians, his leadership and the party alliances he forged illustrate the internal divisions that marked the fragility of German democracy on the eve of Nazism.
