Ferdinand Hodler was one of the leading Swiss painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, recognized as a precursor of expressionist tendencies in Switzerland. Trained through apprenticeships in Thun and Geneva and through direct study of the masters in Basel and Madrid, Hodler began his career painting portraits, landscapes and genre scenes in a realist style, later developing a more symbolic and formal vocabulary. From the last decade of the 19th century he developed “parallelism,” his characteristic aesthetic proposal marked by symmetry, rhythm and stylized figures; works such as Night, Day and Eurythmy gained international attention when exhibited and awarded at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Hodler also produced large historical compositions and frescoes, including a commissioned series for the Schweizerisches Landesmuseum in Zurich, whose execution provoked controversy. In the early 20th century his work became more expressionist, with intense colors and geometric forms. His output includes intimate and dramatic representations, such as the sequence depicting the illness of Valentine Godé-Darel. He is today considered the best-known Swiss painter of the 19th century, with works in major public collections in Switzerland, at the Musée d'Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
