Ferdinand von Sachsen-Coburg (Ferdinand Georg August) was a prince of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and, by marriage, head of the Saxe-Coburg-Koháry branch. A career military officer, he served as a cavalry general in the army of the Austrian Empire during the Napoleonic Wars, a service that earned him high military decorations and honorary orders from several European states. His marriage to Maria Antónia de Koháry in 1815 was decisive for the family's political and financial rise: upon inheriting the Koháry estates in 1826, the branch converted to Catholicism and strengthened ties with Catholic dynasties across Europe. Four children were born of that union, among them Ferdinand II, future king consort of Portugal, who expanded the Coburgs’ dynastic influence in several crowns. Ferdinand held a prominent place in the network of European royal kinship, being uncle to figures such as Queen Victoria and King Leopold I of the Belgians, which reinforced his diplomatic and dynastic significance in the nineteenth century. He died in Vienna in 1851 and was buried in Coburg, leaving a legacy tied to the family's territorial, religious, and political–dynastic expansion.
