Fernand Léger was a French painter and draftsman associated with Cubism and the avant‑gardes of the twentieth century, known for integrating the human figure with industrial elements. Trained in Lower Normandy, he settled in Paris and associated with artists such as Robert Delaunay, Jacques Lipchitz and Marc Chagall, receiving decisive influences from Picasso and Georges Braque from 1911 onward. His experience in the First World War profoundly affected his work: from that point he developed an admiration for the mechanical world and the forms of war objects, which became recurring motifs. In the 1920s he consolidated an aesthetic in which human bodies are framed by industrial structures; during this period he also directed the film Le Ballet mécanique. Exiled in the United States during the Second World War, he taught at Yale and at Mills College and returned to France in 1945, when he began to emphasize themes related to labor and the proletariat and joined the Communist Party. Among his late works the Grand Parade (1954) stands out; he also executed stained glass and panels for public institutions. Léger’s work influenced Constructivism and modern applied art—from posters to design—and is remembered for its firm line and the separation of color and drawing, which give his figures an almost mechanical appearance.
