William Matthew Flinders Petrie was a British archaeologist and Egyptologist known for systematizing excavation methods and chronology in archaeology. A pioneer in linking pottery styles to historical periods, he developed techniques that made it possible to reconstruct sequences of events in ancient cultures, transforming the scientific practice of excavation. He worked extensively in Egypt from 1880 onward, at sites such as Giza, Memphis, Thebes, Abydos, Amarna, Tanis and Naucratis. His fieldwork and publications provided a foundation for subsequent generations of archaeologists; he was also the first Edwards Professor of Egyptian Archaeology and Philology at University College London (1892–1933), where he trained many professionals. He amassed a large collection of Egyptian objects, sold to University College in 1913 and now housed in the Petrie Museum. Author of more than a hundred books, he was knighted in 1923. In his later years he shifted his research to border regions between Egypt and Canaan and died in Jerusalem in 1942.
