Forbes Carlile was a pioneer in sports preparation for Australian swimming and a central figure in the development of generations of elite athletes. He served as Australia’s head coach at the 1948 and 1956 Olympic Games, as a scientific advisor in 1960 and later as head coach at World Championships, and he led the Dutch Olympic team in 1964. He is the only person to have coached and later competed at the Olympic Games, taking part in the modern pentathlon at Helsinki in 1952. A graduate in physiology from the University of Sydney, Carlile introduced methods that became standard in competitive training: interval sessions, the use of pace clocks, training logs, heart-rate monitoring and tapering strategies. He also researched stroke techniques and advocated even pacing and a two-beat kick for long-distance events. The author of works on swimming, his 1963 book was among the first to systematize modern training. As a coach he developed internationally prominent swimmers, including Shane Gould and Ian O’Brien. He was appointed an MBE (1977) and inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, leaving a lasting legacy in sports science and coach education.
