Forrest J. Ackerman was a central figure in twentieth‑century science fiction culture, working as an editor, literary agent, writer and collector. He founded and served as the driving force behind Famous Monsters of Filmland, an influential magazine that promoted films and authors of the fantastic. As an agent he represented names such as Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov and A. E. van Vogt, helping to place and sustain genre works in the publishing market. Ackerman was also a tireless organizer and promoter of fandom: he attended the first Worldcon, popularized costume wearing at conventions—being acknowledged as the “father” of costuming—and coined the term “sci‑fi,” which became a common label for the genre. A proponent of Esperanto among fans, he remained active in the networks of clubs and fanzines that formed the science‑fiction community. A compulsive collector, he amassed hundreds of thousands of books and film memorabilia in the famed “Ackermansion,” opening his home to thousands of visitors and helping to preserve the history of the fantastic. His legacy includes the professionalization of the science‑fiction market, the spread of popular fantastic culture, and the preservation of a vast reference collection for scholars and fans.
