Francis Sellers Collins is an American physician-geneticist known for his scientific leadership and for playing a decisive role in identifying genes linked to numerous diseases. As director of the Human Genome Project, he helped lead the international effort that resulted in sequencing the human genome in the early 2000s, a milestone that transformed biomedical research and clinical genetics.
Over his career, Collins held prominent institutional positions, including director of the National Human Genome Research Institute and later head of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, where he was involved in launching large-scale biomedical initiatives. He has received several honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of Science.
Beyond his scientific work, he is the author of books exploring science and faith and the founder of the BioLogos Institute, which promotes dialogue between Christianity and acceptance of evolutionary theory. His legacy combines laboratory and institutional contributions with public engagement in debates at the intersection of science, ethics, and religion.
