Francis Veber is one of the most influential comedy writers in contemporary French cinema, active as a screenwriter, director, producer and playwright. He became known for hugely popular screenplays — such as The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe and The Troubleshooter — and for directing commercially successful comedies including The Goat, The Accomplices, The Runaways and The Closet. His writing favors burlesque and boulevard mechanics, often exploring the dynamic of the comic duo (the “auguste” and the “whiteface” clown) that recurs in characters such as François Pignon and François Perrin. That formal device brought him massive success in France and abroad, notably with La Chèvre, which attracted international audiences. Veber also worked in the United States as a script doctor and screenwriter, living in Los Angeles from the 1980s onward. In 1993 he returned artistically to France with The Dinner of Fools — a play he himself adapted for the screen in 1998 — thereby consolidating one of the most durable comic legacies in Francophone cinema. His career belongs to a family tradition tied to letters and the performing arts, and his work remains a touchstone for the theatrical precision of its plotting and the longevity of the comic archetypes he invented.
