Franco Modigliani was an Italian‑American economist whose academic and intellectual work profoundly influenced twentieth‑century macroeconomics and finance. He earned his doctorate from the New School for Social Research and taught at institutions including Carnegie Mellon and MIT, where he developed enduring theoretical contributions. In 1985 he received the Prize in Economic Sciences in recognition of the impact of his work.
Beginning in the 1950s, he formulated the Life‑Cycle Hypothesis, which seeks to explain patterns of saving and consumption over the lifespan, and he was involved in the early development of the notion of rational expectations. In 1958, with Merton Miller, he formulated the Modigliani–Miller theorem, a cornerstone of modern corporate finance theory that shows the conditions under which capital structure does not affect firm value.
Over the following decades he took part in central debates on macroeconomic policy and introduced concepts such as the NIRU (non‑inflationary rate of unemployment). He published influential books and articles and left a theoretical and methodological legacy in macroeconomics, finance, and risk‑adjusted performance evaluation.
