François-Vincent Raspail was a French scientist and political activist whose work spanned chemistry, physiology, medicine and republican politics. He contributed to the early development of cell theory and was among the first to promote use of the microscope in the study of plants; the phrase omnis cellula e cellula is historically attributed to him. A proponent of sanitation measures, antiseptics and dietary practices, he published health popularizations such as the Manuel annuaire de la santé, which circulated widely in the nineteenth century.
Active in public life as well, Raspail joined republican organizations and Freemasonry and took part in movements that led to his imprisonment during the 1830s–1850s. He was a candidate for the presidency of the Second Republic in 1848 and was involved in uprisings such as the attempt of 15 May 1848; after the 1851 coup he was exiled until 1862. He returned to politics as a deputy during the liberal phase of the Second Empire and retained influence into the Third Republic.
His legacy combines scientific work and political commitment: in addition to medical and chemical writings, he left a public imprint—for example, the Paris boulevard that bears his name—and influenced generations of thinkers and practitioners in public health and biology.
