Frank Macfarlane Burnet was a prominent Australian physician and virologist whose research helped shape modern immunology. As director of the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute from 1944 to 1965, Burnet conducted pioneering studies on bacteriophages, influenza viruses and agents such as psittacosis and Q fever, as well as work that influenced viral genetics.

In the 1950s he established the clonal selection theory — a key explanatory framework for how lymphocytes recognize and eliminate antigens — and, together with Peter Medawar, received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1960 for studies on acquired immunological tolerance. These discoveries provided experimental foundations that advanced transplantation and immunotherapy.

A prolific author, he published more than 500 articles and 31 books and monographs, and played an active role in shaping scientific policy in Australia. He was a founding member and president of the Australian Academy of Science and received numerous national and international honors, including the Lasker Award and the Royal Medal of the Royal Society.

His academic and institutional career — with a long association with the University of Melbourne after leaving the institute — established a lasting legacy in Australian and global biomedical research.
