Frank Edward Thomas Jr., known as “The Big Hurt,” is a former American baseball player who served primarily as a designated hitter and first baseman in Major League Baseball from 1990 to 2008. An icon of the modern Chicago White Sox, he was selected to seven All-Star Games, established himself as one of the greatest right-handed hitters in history, and won two American League MVP awards, in 1993 and 1994.

From 1991 to 1997, Thomas compiled seven consecutive seasons with at least a .300 batting average, 100 RBIs, 100 runs, 100 walks, and 20 home runs — a unique achievement in the league. He won the batting title in 1997 with a .347 average and finished his career with 521 home runs, 1,704 RBIs, and a lifetime .301 average, becoming one of the few players to retire with at least a .300 average and 500 home runs.

His longevity and plate discipline produced franchise records for the White Sox across several offensive categories; the club retired his number 35 and erected a statue in his honor. Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014 on his first ballot, Thomas also played a prominent role in defending anti-doping efforts and was cited as one of the few stars of his generation without public suspicion of using banned substances.

Athletically developed in Columbus, Georgia, he excelled in multiple sports from a young age before choosing professional baseball, a career that established him among the premier hitters of his generation.
