Franz Uri Boas was a German‑American anthropologist and a central figure in the shaping of modern anthropology in the United States, often called the “father of American anthropology.” Trained in physics and geography in Germany, he carried out fieldwork among Arctic peoples and studied the indigenous languages of North America, adopting an empirical, descriptive approach that treated each culture on its own terms. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1887, worked as a curator at institutions such as the American Museum of Natural History and, above all, founded and led the first doctoral program in anthropology at Columbia University, where he trained generations of influential anthropologists — including Ruth Benedict, Edward Sapir, Margaret Mead and A. L. Kroeber. A vigorous critic of the evolutionary and determinist theories of his time, Boas argued for the relative autonomy of cultural phenomena, showing that culture, language and history follow varied and complex paths rather than a single unilinear course. His work was decisive in challenging scientific racism and in establishing cultural diversity as a legitimate subject of academic study. Legacy: beyond his seminal publications on race, language and culture, Boas left an intellectual school that transformed the methods and assumptions of anthropology and linguistics in the twentieth century.
