Fraser Stoddart was a Scottish-born chemist who later became a British–American citizen, whose academic and scientific career helped establish the field of molecular machines. A professor at institutions including Birmingham, UCLA, Northwestern and the University of Hong Kong, he supervised hundreds of students and led groups focused on supramolecular chemistry and nanotechnology. His work combined fundamental research with technological applications, ranging from synthetic protocols to integration into nanoelectronic devices and NEMS. Stoddart became known for developing rotaxanes, catenanes and the so-called molecular Borromean rings, using molecular recognition and self-assembly to construct interlocked architectures. He showed that these topologies can operate as switches and components of molecular-scale machines, controllable by chemical, electrical and optical stimuli. For the impact of these contributions to the design and synthesis of molecular machines, he received numerous awards, including the King Faisal Prize (2007) and, in 2016, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (shared). His distinctive graphical style in publications and the standardization of color schemes also influenced visual communication in the field. Stoddart’s scientific legacy includes efficient synthetic procedures, the opening of new approaches to molecular engineering and the training of a research community that advanced the frontiers of nanoscience.
