Fred Astaire, stage name of Frederick Austerlitz, was an American actor and dancer of Jewish origin.
He made his film debut in 1915 in a small cameo, and in 1933 appeared alongside Joan Crawford in Dancing Lady. That same year he appeared in the first of a series of ten films with Ginger Rogers. The two formed an impeccable partnership (he gave her class, she gave him sex appeal, a studio director once explained).
Hollywood was right to award him a special Oscar in 1949 for his contribution to the technique of film musicals. Ginger Rogers, of course, was the one who presented the award to him.
