Fred Mella was a French tenor and singer, best known as the lead soloist of the vocal group Les Compagnons de la Chanson. Born into a family that valued bel canto, he trained in choral singing under the guidance of Louis Liébard and played a central role in the group's move into music-hall after the decisive meeting with Édith Piaf in 1944. As a founding member of Les Compagnons de la Chanson, Mella helped make the group one of the longest-lasting names in French song, taking part in landmark tours and recordings, including renditions of hits such as Les Trois Cloches. He remained with the ensemble until 1985, when the members disbanded, and pursued a solo career for several decades, recording his own material and reinterpreting the group's classics. Beyond his musical activity, Mella explored the visual arts and founded the label Mi-Laur to release part of his output. He also published memoirs about his artistic career. His legacy remains associated with strengthening the French popular choral tradition and popularizing the twentieth-century repertoire.
