Frederica von Stade is an American mezzo-soprano whose career was established at major opera houses and on recital stages through the closing decades of the 20th century and into the early 21st. Known for a lyrical quality that reached into soprano tessitura, she became famous for trouser roles such as Cherubino, Idamante and Octavian, as well as for leading parts like Rosina, Angelina and Mélisande. Her association with the repertories of Mozart, Rossini and French music, together with collaborations with contemporary American composers—most notably Jake Heggie—shaped her artistic career. She recorded more than one hundred albums and videos, received honors such as being named a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and was nominated for Grammy Awards on multiple occasions. She took part in important premieres, including pioneering productions in the United States and at the Metropolitan Opera, and participated in world premieres by contemporary composers, thereby expanding the mezzo repertoire. In addition to her stage career, she has been active in concerts, recitals and in training young singers through master classes. In recent years she has reduced her concert schedule, focusing on occasional appearances, teaching, judging competitions and philanthropic work aimed at children's musical education.
