Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi was a German philosopher and writer whose interventions shaped intellectual debate at the turn of the nineteenth century. Born into a wealthy family in Düsseldorf, he combined public duties — financial administration and advisory posts — with an active literary life, hosting an influential cultural circle at his home and founding periodicals of his day.
Jacobi became known for his critique of Enlightenment rationalism and of philosophical systems such as those of Spinoza, Kant, Fichte and Schelling, coining and popularizing the critical use of the term "nihilism." A proponent of fideism, he emphasized Glaube (belief/faith) and Offenbarung (revelation) as complements to speculative reason, arguing that the existence of the external world requires an immediate acceptance that cannot be reduced to rational proof.
His polemic with representatives of the Aufklärung and the debate over pantheism affected how atheism and the crisis of moral foundations were received in German philosophy. Despite criticism, Jacobi’s legacy lies in the theoretical provocation that forced contemporary thinkers to reexamine the limits of reason, the role of faith, and the relation between philosophy and religion.
