Friedrich Hund was a German physicist renowned for fundamental contributions to atomic and molecular theory. Trained in Göttingen, where he was a pupil of Max Born, he developed theoretical work that explained the electronic properties of atoms and molecules, leaving lasting marks on quantum chemistry. His scientific output includes papers and landmark chapters on spectra and the structure of matter, as well as treatises and textbooks that influenced generations of physicists.
Over the course of his career he held chairs at major academic centers — including Göttingen, Leipzig and Rostock — and maintained exchanges with leading figures in quantum physics, organizing prominent seminars that made his workplaces hubs of theoretical research. He also served as a professor and advisor, contributing to the training of later names in physics.
In addition to his scientific activity, Hund wrote syntheses and histories of physics, reflecting on fundamental concepts and on the development of quantum theory. His legacy endures in the nomenclature and rules that bear his name in physics and chemistry, as well as in books still consulted by students and researchers.
