Fritz Kolbe was a German diplomat whose actions in the 1930s–40s made him a figure of resistance to the Nazi regime. Trained in the foreign service, he held various posts — including in Madrid, Warsaw and at the consulate in Cape Town — and remained notable for refusing to join the Nazi Party, which consigned him to secondary duties throughout the war.
During World War II, Kolbe worked at the Foreign Office in Berlin, where he had privileged access to reports, consular dispatches and diplomatic communications. In that role he became “one of the ministry’s best‑informed officials” and began channeling sensitive documents to Allied networks and the French Resistance, contributing to operations that saved lives and led to the arrest of enemy spies.
His stance was motivated by personal convictions and ethical influences from contemporaries, prompting him to use procedural opportunities — such as trips with the diplomatic pouch — to pass information to Allied embassies. Kolbe’s legacy is that of a civil servant who, faced with the Nazi repressive apparatus, chose active disobedience and concrete support for resistance efforts during the conflict.
