Gelindo Bordin is a former Italian marathoner best known for the greatest triumph of his career: the gold medal in the marathon at the Seoul Olympic Games (1988), becoming the first Italian to win that event at the Olympics. His competitive record also includes the European marathon title (1986) and a historic victory in the Boston Marathon (1990), the only Italian win in that North American classic, when he set his personal best of 2:08:19. Raised through cross-country and road‑running ranks, Bordin progressed under coaches such as Giacomo Dalla Pria and Gianni Ghidini, and was prominent nationally from his youth, with titles and podiums in half-marathon, cross-country and long‑track events. On the international stage he consolidated his standing with notable podiums and placings at European and World Championships, as well as Olympic appearances in 1988 and 1992. After an injury at Barcelona 1992 he soon retired from professional competition, leaving a pioneering legacy for Italian distance running. His combination of endurance, tactical intelligence in long races and international achievements keeps him among Italy’s most notable marathoners of the late twentieth century.
