Gemma Galgani was an Italian mystic and religious sister, venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church since 1940. Known as the “Daughter of the Passion,” she became known for her intense devotion and identification with the Passion of Christ, a phenomenon that made her a central figure among the faithful and within the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus (Passionists). Daughter of a pharmacist, she grew up in Lucca amid financial hardship after the loss of her mother and the family’s economic decline. While still young she entered religious institutions for study and formation, where she developed an extraordinary devotional practice: long prayers from childhood, mystical experiences such as interior locutions and, according to reports, the stigmata. Rejected by some convents, she was taken in by the Giannini family in her final years and guided spiritually by Mons. Volpi and the Passionist Germano Ruoppolo, author of her first biography. Her short life, marked by physical suffering — including tuberculosis — and an intense inner life, inspired widespread popular devotion. After her death, her memory prompted the construction of a Passionist monastery in Lucca, where her remains are kept, consolidating her spiritual legacy and the spread of devotion to her among religious communities and pilgrims.
