George du Maurier was a Franco-British cartoonist, illustrator and novelist whose work shaped Victorian cultural life. As a member of the satirical magazine Punch from 1865, he became famous for cartoons that mocked the affected manners of society and the rising middle class, coining expressions such as "a curate's egg" and "bedside manner." His illustrations also appeared in influential periodicals of the time, such as Harper's and The Graphic, and accompanied important serialized publications. Progressive loss of his sight forced him to scale back his graphic work and turn to prose; between 1891 and 1898 he published three novels. Peter Ibbetson (1891) enjoyed moderate success and inspired several later adaptations for the stage, opera and film. The greater literary phenomenon was Trilby (1894), a gothic novel that introduced the figure of Svengali and had immense popular impact — from product names to numerous adaptations and derivative works. Du Maurier also left a family legacy in the arts: his son, granddaughters and other descendants pursued careers in acting, literature and painting. Although he sometimes resented the attention focused on Trilby, his dual career as a satirical illustrator and novelist secured him a prominent place in late-19th-century British culture.
