Sir George Ross Mathewson is a Scottish businessman known for his work in banking and in Scotland’s economic development. He earned a degree in mathematics and applied physics from the University of St Andrews and began his career in academia and as an engineer in the United States before moving into venture capital and directing the state economic regeneration agency, the Scottish Development Agency, in the 1980s. In 1987 he joined the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), becoming chief executive in 1992 at a time when the bank was dealing with problem loans. He led “Project Columbus,” a restructuring program that modernized retail operations, improved credit controls and introduced a stronger commercial focus, preparing the bank for expansion. The most notable episode of his career was the acquisition of NatWest in 2000, a large-scale deal that repositioned RBS within the British and international financial landscape. Mathewson later served as vice‑chairman and chairman of the board until his departure in 2006. He was awarded the CBE and was later knighted for services to Scotland’s economic development and to banking. His career is linked to the institutional transformation and global expansion of the bank under his leadership.
