George Washington Carver was an American botanist, agronomist, inventor and educator whose career became known for advancing sustainable agriculture and training poor farmers. As head of the Department of Agriculture at the Tuskegee Institute for nearly five decades, he promoted crop rotation and the adoption of alternatives to cotton—especially peanut and sweet potato—to restore exhausted soils and provide food and income for rural families. Author of numerous technical bulletins, his best‑known manual collected more than a hundred recipes and uses for the peanut, although few of his innovations achieved commercial success. He also developed a “mobile classroom” to bring agricultural techniques directly to farmers, expanding the practical reach of his research. Recognized for his scientific and teaching skills, Carver received honors such as the Spingarn Medal and wide public visibility at a time of entrenched racial segregation. His life—from being born into slavery to becoming an academic pioneer and popularizer of science—left a legacy in promoting rural self‑sufficiency, educating generations of Black students, and spreading more sustainable farming practices.
