Georges Bernanos was a French novelist and journalist whose work is rooted in a deep religious and moral reflection. A committed Catholic, he explored in his books the spiritual struggle between good and evil, often through priestly figures at odds with a society he regarded as defeatist and conformist. He rose to prominence with titles such as Under the Sun of Satan (1926) and Diary of a Country Priest (1938), which established his critical and literary reputation. Politically engaged, he served in the trenches during World War I and covered the Spanish Civil War as a correspondent, an experience that altered his initial support for Franco. After the fall of France in 1940, he lived in exile in Brazil, from where he denounced the Vichy regime and supported the Resistance through impassioned writings. His Brazilian period was marked by intense intellectual exchange: he welcomed and influenced local writers, completed major works such as Monsieur Ouine, and left an editorial legacy that endures in translations and studies. He declined official posts and honors, remaining committed to an independent and critical view of public and religious life.
