Georges René Louis Marchais was a French politician who led the French Communist Party (PCF) from 1972 to 1994. Born into a Catholic family and initially trained as a worker in the aeronautical industry, he began his trade-union career with the CGT in Issy-les-Moulineaux and joined the PCF in 1947, rising to the Central Committee in 1956 and to the Political Committee in 1959. He became general secretary in 1974, a role in which he became known for an orthodox, spirited communism and for a direct, austere personal style. During his tenure, Marchais took part in negotiations for a left-wing alliance with the Socialist Party and supported François Mitterrand in 1974, although he broke with the common program three years later. He was the PCF’s presidential candidate in 1981 and, despite winning around 15% of the vote, the party joined Mitterrand’s government with communist ministers. In the following years he faced declining party support, internal crises and a split led by Pierre Juquin, which culminated in a loss of electoral influence. Author of several political essays and books, Marchais remained a central figure of French communism until he was succeeded by Robert Hue in 1994. His legacy combines a defense of Marxism–Leninism, partial adherence to Eurocommunism and a reputation for seriousness and frankness in public life.
