Gerhard Adler was a German–British Jungian analyst and psychiatrist whose career was notable for translating, editing, and defending the works of Carl Gustav Jung. Trained in psychology, philosophy, and history at Freiburg, he refined his clinical skills at the Burghölzli clinic and underwent analysis with Jung from 1931 to 1934; he opened a practice in Berlin before emigrating to the United Kingdom in 1936, where he worked as a therapist and teacher at institutions such as the Tavistock. Author of studies on analytical psychology — including Analytical Psychology (1948), The Living Symbol (1961), and The Dynamics of the Self (1979) — Adler also organized and edited Jung’s correspondence and writings, helping to disseminate Jungian work internationally. A consistent defender of Jung’s ideas, he took public positions in controversies over political and historical interpretations. Institutionally, he was a founder of the Society of Analytical Psychology (1945), a cofounder of the International Association for Analytical Psychology, and served as its president from 1971 to 1977. Disagreements with members of the British school later led him to found the Association of Jungian Analysts, consolidating a current loyal to the Zurich tradition. His legacy lies in the preservation, editing, and promotion of Jung’s works and in his influence on the institutionalization and teaching of analytical psychology in the United Kingdom and internationally.
